The first lighthouse off the coast of Iceland was built at Valahnjúkur in Reykjanes in 1878. Over the next 22 years, 4 more lighthouses were built, so there were five lighthouses in Iceland at the beginning of the 1900s. The construction of the lighthouse system around Iceland finished in 1954 when Hrollaugseyjaviti was built. The first lighthouse in Krosshúsabjarg on the south end of Flatey Island in Skjálfandi was built in 1913. Fifty years later, a new lighthouse was designed by architect Skarphéðin Jóhannsson. It runs on solar energy, as almost half of the lighthouses in Iceland today.
The lighthouse is the yellow building at the top of the picture. The circle in the middle of the pasture is quite unique, probably an old meadow.
