Nowhere in Iceland is the history of the Vikings as vivid as in Dalasýsla. Leifur Eiríksson, who found America, was born in Eiríksstaðir in 879. The poet and historian Snorri Sturluson was born just north, in Hvammur, three hundred years later, in 1179. Today, the district is primarily agricultural. The population is just under 650 people; where people are in close contact with nature, the light that spreads west of Breiðafjörður, and of course the history, which is at every step.
