Skating on Rauðavatn

Three lakes, four pictures

There are very few lakes within the capital, of course Reykjavíkur Tjörn is the lake that first comes to mind. Located in the heart of the city center. Then of course there is Rauðavatn, a small lake by highway nr. 1 out of the capital to the south and east. Surrounded by a great outdoor area, especially in the winter, both for ice skating and cross-country skiing. Then there is Elliðavatn, the source of Elliðaár, a salmon fishing river that flows through the center of the capital, from Heiðmörk, an outdoor recreation area at the outskirts of Reykjavík, Kópavogur, Garðabær and Hafnarfjörður. Icelandic Times / Land & Saga went out and about on a beautiful but short day to experience human life and nature at its best in the capital, in the middle of December, by these three lakes.
