It is questionable whether Hamraborg in the center of Kópavogur, the second largest municipality in Iceland, is high rising or beautiful. But… there are many good, excellent things to do in Kópavogur, located in the center of the capital area. A young town with almost 42 thousand inhabitants. Town that was created in 1948, when about five hundred inhabitants in the current area of Kópavogur formed a new village. Before the area was part of Seltjarnarnes, with Reykjavík in between. In 1950, the population of Kópavogur had grown to 1,600, ten years later over six thousand. In 1970 they were almost 14 thousand. The population in 1990 reached a little over sixteen thousand. In the next two decades, the population increased by 14 thousand. to almost 30,000 in 2010. Now thirteen years later, there are 13,000 more inhabitants, or close to 43,000 people. Kópavogur does not only have the largest shopping center in the country, Smáralind, or the tallest tower, but also a town with a strong sports and cultural life, with it´s center just west of Hamraborg.
