Hraunfossar, the series of waterfalls which flow into the Hvítá River in Borgarfjördur, just west of Húsafell, are nothing short of a natural wonder. Over a kilometre-long stretch, countless clear streams and waterfalls cascade from Hallmundarhraun lava field into this beautiful salmon river. Hallmundarhraun, which covers about 200 km² of land, originated from a volcanic eruption shortly after the settlement of Iceland, just before the year 1000, and flows from the glacier over a fifty-kilometre path from its source in and around Langjökull down to Hvítársída. The pictures of Hraunfossar in Borgarfjördur speak for themselves, but it takes just over an hour and a half from the capital to see and enjoy this natural wonder. Needless to say, it’s worth the trip.
