ICELAND’S FIVE MOST BEAUTIFUL WATERFALLS

Iceland is a land of waterfalls. But which of these cascades, so variable in shapes and sizes, are the most beautiful? Gullfoss, Godafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Hraunfossar, Háifoss, or Hjálp? Of course, it’s practically impossible to pick just one. It depends on the light, the season, or who you are with and the mood you are in when you visit the waterfall. Additionally, it depends on how you experience the surrounding nature and the energy of the waterfall, like with Europe’s most powerful waterfall, the thundering Dettifoss in Jökulsá á Fjöllum. It is naturally a must on this list, being unique. Dettifoss is in the northeast corner in Öxarfjördur, with the nearest town, Húsavík, about 70 km away. Another waterfall, Dynjandi in Arnarfjördur in the Westfjords, is quite without equal; the nearest town is Þingeyri in Dýrafjördur, about 30 km away. Klifbrekkufossar in Mjóifjördur in the Eastfjords is exceptionally well-situated at the fjord’s bottom but can only be visited in high summer. The road from Egilsstadir over Mjóafjardarheidi is closed with the first snows of autumn and doesn’t open again until well into summer. Then, in South Iceland, there are both Skógafoss, exceptionally large and powerful, 30 km west of Vík í Mýrdal on Route 1, and Brúarárfoss in Biskupstungur, 15 km north of Laugarvatn; a unique natural gem.
