Gerdarsafn, located in the centre of Kópavogur, is a progressive museum of modern and contemporary art and the only art museum in the country founded in honour of a female artist, sculptor Gerdur Helgadóttir (1928-1975).
Currently on display at the museum is an exhibition by Rósa Gísladóttir (1957) titled “Fora,” the Latin plural form of “forum.” The exhibition transports us to another world, bridging time. In the two exhibition halls, two worlds meet: large and small, ancient and modern. Yet Rósa’s artworks primarily create a powerful visual impression.
Downstairs at Gerdarsafn, there are two other exhibitions: the “Gerdur” foundational exhibition and Þykjó, (“Make Believe”), a fantastic exhibition for children of all ages, curated by Sigrídur Sunna Reynisdóttir.
