Snæfell is the highest mountain in Iceland outside the glaciers, rising 1833 m / 6017 ft into the air, 20 km / 12 mi north of Vatnajökull. The mountain and the surrounding area are part of Vatnajökull National Park, which covers 1/10th of Iceland. Snæfell is a volcano that has been dormant for 10,000 years, which is not a long time in geological history. Under Snæfell is a cabin run by Vatnajökull National Park with room for 45 overnight guests. The areas around Snæfell, Eyjabakkar and Vesturöræf are the main habitats of Reindeer in Iceland, but the wild population numbers about 4000 animals.
