Fossinn Hjálp í Þjórsárdal

In The Colour of Black and White

Capturing the Icelandic landscape is no mean feat. So multifaceted, layered, and different—it is larger than what the camera or phone can conceivably capture. But for a photographer, or even a tourist, it’s an enjoyable challenge to capture a moment that is here one second and gone the next. My best advice, after working as a professional photographer for more than four decades, is to take your time, simplify things, and enjoy getting wet, cold, and tired. Because a good photograph makes you forget everything else.

Here are six moments of the Icelandic landscape, where colour was put aside in five of them. Because sometimes—quite rarely—the land, the landscape, and the atmosphere are stronger in black and white.
