Kirkjufell

Kirkjufell is very special in the landscape of the Snæfellsnes peninsula and attracts attention due to its shape. Jon Snow and his crew searched for this special mountain form and found Kirkjufell. Scenes in series 7 of Game of Thrones were filmed there.

Snæfellsnes is otherwise known for its great and exceptional natural beauty. There are countless historical sites, a majestic glacier and a coastline where flowing lava created all kinds of strange formations and works of art.

Snæfellsjökull Glacier is a volcano that last erupted about 1,750 years ago. It is the setting of the book Journley to the Centre of the Earth by the French author Jules Verne. The protagonist goes down into a crater and travels to the earth’s centre!

Snæfellsnes is also the storyline of Under the Glacier (Kristnihald under Jökli), a popular book by the Icelandic Nobel Prize-winning author Halldór Laxness. The film was based on the story and premiered in 1989.
