Natural History Museum of Bolungarvík

At the Natural History Museum, seals and wild mammals of the Westfjords are on display, as well as a polar bear that was hunted just off the Westfjords. The museum features over 250 birds from 169 species, along with various colour variations. There are also eggs from most breeding species and nests.

The rock collection mainly originates from Steinn Emilsson but also includes contributions from other collectors. Shells and lignite (fossilized wood) illustrate how enormous trees once grew in Iceland long ago. A jawbone, likely from the largest blue whale ever hunted, is part of a collaborative exhibition between the Natural History Museum of Bolungarvík and the botanical garden Skrúdur in Dýrafjördur, where the bones stood for nearly 80 years. A new exhibition is currently running about the raven and its cultural significance through the ages.
