Welcome to the publication release of the book Esseyja / Island Fiction in the Nordic House, November 14th at 4.30pm, on Surtsey 60th eruption anniversary.
The book Esseyja / Island Fiction weaves together works of art, a travelogue and texts that deal with the complex aspects of the existence, history and meaning of the island in the distance.
In this beautiful publication, readers get an insight into Þorgerður Ólafsdóttir‘s travels and artworks in connection with Surtsey, which has been an ongoing project for several years. The book contains essays by Becky Forsythe, Birna Lárusdóttir, Guðbjörg R. Jóhannesdóttir and Þóra Pétursdóttir. For the book, Þorgerður and Gunndís Ýr Finnbogadóttir created a special version of their collaborative work Unstable Ground, which opens next year in Gerðarsafn art museum.
The designer of the book is Elín Edda Þorsteinsdóttir, graphic designer and illustrator.
In connection to the publication of the book and the 60th Anniversary of Surtsey eruption, Þorgerður has installed a new public art work at Kambarnor, Hellisheiði, titled Spor / Imprint, where you might receive a greeting from Surtsey in clear weather. The work is part of the Sequences XI Art Festival and will stand throughout the month of November. The artwork Spor/Imprint is part of a larger body of work that Þorgerður will continue to work on at this particular place in Kambarnir, in the coming years.
Part of Þorgerður’s visual art project took place in the exhibition Séstey / Hverfey in Surtseyjarstofa, Vestmannaeyjar, which is overseen by the Environment Agency. Þorgerður’s exhibition in Vestmannaeyjar has been open for two years and will come to an end this November.
The book is in both Icelandic and English and is published in collaboration with the research project Relics of Nature.
