It’s been almost twenty years since the neighbourhood Sjáland in Garðabær was built, around the ideas of architect Björn Ólafs. A neighborhood with 750 apartments and over 2,200 inhabitants, designed by a number of architects to give the neighbourhood a look that it’s not to monotonous. The writer Hallgrímur Helgason then provided the ideas for a name and street names in this special neighbourhood at the southern end of Arnarnesvogur near Gálfahraun. From there it’s a short drive to Álftanes, to Bessastaðir, the residence of the President of Iceland. Few districts in the entire capital area have as good a view of the sea or as good cycling and walking paths as Sjáland in Garðabær, a town that has been among the fastest growing towns in Iceland in recent years. It will be getting even more populous than Akureyri in the near future.
