Shortly after new years 1975-1976, Icelanders broke political relations with Great Britain. Unique in the history of NATO, and unique to a friendly nation in the immediate vicinity. The Norwegians took care of interstate relations between the nations after the Icelandic jurisdiction was moved from 50 nautical miles to 200 nautical miles on July 15, 1975. Almost a year later, an agreement was signed in Oslo between the countries, with Iceland’s complete victory, after three bitter cod wars. The first from 1958 to 1961, the second from 1972-1973 and the third and last from 1975-1976. After the agreement, relations between Iceland and Great Britain became normal and very good again. There is currently an exhibition organized by Iceland’s Photographic Museum, Reykjavík City’s Civic History Museum in Pósthússtræti by Austurvöllur. An interesting exhibition, on the occasion of the President of Iceland’s book on the Cod Wars, an exhibition that everyone must see before it is taken down.
