Öræfajökull

The Tallest, Biggest & Potentially Deadliest

Hvannadalshnjúkur, located in the Öræfajökull glacier, is the highest and largest mountain in Iceland. It’s also part of Vatnajökull National Park. Öræfajökull, where Hvannadalshnjúkur is situated, is not only the country’s most powerful volcano but has also erupted twice since Iceland was settled: once in 1362, causing significant destruction to the surrounding area, and later in 1727. When such a mighty volcano rumbles, you best be prepared to run with all your might. Icelandic Times captured the atmosphere in the Öræfasveit near the glacier in mid-April this year, with many tourists enjoying the best weather of the season.
