Where should you go during the high winters in Iceland to experience heavy snow, darkness, the northern lights, cold and culture, warm people and great ski slopes? There is only one place that comes to mind. Siglufjörður. A town that was 70 years ago the fifth largest town in the republic now has about 1500 people living in harmony with the mountains, the fjord and nature. In the middle of the 20th century, Siglufjörður became large when it became the herring capital of the world; a quarter of all Icelandic exports for a time came from this town north of the central north. In this small but big town are good hotels, good restaurants, great world-class museums, and unparalleled mountains.
