Strandir is the east coastline of Westfjords. The only town on the coast is Hólmavík. A picturesque village, the gate to the wondrous wilderness of the northernmost part of Westfjords.
Hólmavík has everything you need like a campsite, hotel, stores, gas station and a swimming pool. It also has a very unique museum called the Museum of Sorcery and Witchcraft, the home of the necropants and other black magic. In 1654 3 men were burned on stakes for sorcery. That event started a period in Icelandic history called Brennuöldin, the Fire century. You’ll find out all about it at this very unique museum. A must for everyone visiting the area.
Outdoor activities
Hólmavik is the center for most activities in Strandir. Most visitors to the area come to enjoy nature in various ways like hiking on one of the many trails in the area, bird watching, whale watching with Láki Tours or enjoy the tranquil experience at Drangsnes hot springs.
Convenient facilities
Another unique feature in Strandabyggð is that there is one of the very few golf courses (9 holes) in the world where you can do some whale watching while waiting for your turn.
Hólmavík also has an excellent campsite with more or less everything you need and it’s next to the swimming pool and a walking distance to the grocery store.
