Akureyri

In Eyjafjörður

n the middle of northern Iceland Eyjafjörður is located, one of the longest fjords in the country, 60 km long. It is not only beautiful and pleasant to live in and around Eyjafjörður, about 30 thousand people live there, which makes the area the second most populous in the country after the capital area. Akureyri, at the bottom of Eyjafjörður, is the capital of the north, a university, industrial and commercial town. There is also a very active tourism industry, one of the best ski areas in the country is in Hlíðarfjall, in the mountain above the town. In the summer, Akureyri is one of the main stops for cruise ships, as it is close to natural pearls such as Mývatn, Detti- and Goðafoss, or whale watching from Húsavík. In Eyjafjörður there is one inhabited island, Hrísey, which belongs to Akureyri, other towns around Eyjafjörður are Ólafsfjörður, Dalvík, Hauganes and Árskógssandur on the west side of the fjord, and Svalbarðseyri and Grenivík on the east side of the fjord. Here are some pictures from Eyjafjörður, taken in different seasons, because it is beautiful in Eyjafjörður all year round.
