New Landspítali (National Hostpital)

New Landspítali (National Hostpital)

Health affairs have been one of the biggest issues in the election campaign that ends tonight. Here we see the largest project in Icelandic history, the construction of the new Landspítali University Hospital. The project is enormous and will cost around ISK 100 billion, with equipment and tools, when completed in a few years. The first phase, a new treatment centre (hospital), will be opened after five years in 2026. Today, Landspítalinn has operations at 17 locations in 100 buildings in Reykjavík. More than half of Landspítali’s buildings are over half a century old.

Looking over the foundation of the new Landspítali, Hringur Children’s Hospital is on the far left. The first hospital building is just to the right of the centre, designed by Guðjón Samúelsson and opened on December 20, 1930.
