40 Years Since the Founding of Hafnarborg
Value – works from the Hafnarborg Collection
October 19th – December 30th 2023

Thursday October 19th at 6 p.m., we celebrate the opening of an exhibition of works from the Hafnarborg Collection, marking 40 years since the founding of the museum.

A museum or a collection reflects the values of the one doing the collecting. This applies to a public or private collection in equal measure. The collection becomes a statement of the priorities of the person(s) that founded it – whether by sheer interest, a deep-rooted passion and inner need, or even by happenstance. When a collection is then passed on to the community, it gains a life of its own, revealing something about the community itself as it continues to grow. About the ever-changing zeitgeist and people’s preferences, about materials and focus, about ideas and ambitions.

The exhibition will feature select works, acquired by the museum since 2008 – or in the last fifteen years – by artists Egill Sæbjörnsson, Georg Guðni, Guðný Rósa Ingimarsdóttir, Haraldur Jónsson, Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir, Ingólfur Arnarsson, Ingunn Fjóla Ingþórsdóttir, Philipp Valenta, Sirra Sigrún Sigurðardóttir and Una Björg Magnúsdóttir. Some of the works have not been exhibited at Hafnarborg previously.
