Lýður Sigurðsson – Stories of Polar Bear

Gallery Fold presents Stories of Polar Bear a private exhibition with works by the artist Lýður Sigurðsson.
Lýður Sigurðsson opens his solo exhibition, “Stories of Polar Bear”, in the front showroom of Art Gallery Fold at Rauðarárstígur, on Saturday the 14th of October at 2 pm. The artist explores the world of his childhood, where his unbridled imagination formed strange creatures and animal playmates and gave them a place in the margins between dreams and reality. The leader of the group is Hvítibjörn, or Polar Bear, who has followed the artist for decades.
Lýður treads a narrow path between realism, precision, and surreal circumstances, with references to well-known moments in the history of art, children’s books, popular culture of the last decades, tourism, as well as traditional family values. His exhibition is a fantasticworld of adventure for all ages.
Lýður Sigurðsson was born in 1952 on the farm Glerá in Kræklingahlíð near Akureyri. He is a furniture maker by education from the Vocational School in Akureyri, but also attended various art courses at the Akureyri School of Visual Arts. Later he studied at the The Reykjavík School of Visual Arts, under the guidance of Hringur Jóhannesson. Lýður’s images have attracted undivided attention throughout the years and have been shown at numerous solo exhibitions over the past four decades, as well as group exhibitions.
Lýður worked for a long time as a prop maker in the National Theatre. He first exhibited at Gallerí Fold took place in 1998 and then again in 2001. “Stories of Polar Bear” is therefore his third solo exhibition here at Gallerí Fold.
The exhibition includes both sculptures and paintings. Along with the exhibition, a book with his works has been published, detailing the history of Polar Bear, the other strange creatures and the artist’s relationship with them.
The exhibition opens on Saturday, the 14th of October and runs until the 4th of November.
