Thursday April – the museum is open from 13:00-17:00

Hula Hoop Workshop

WHERE? The Granary at Árbær Open Air Museum

WHEN? Thursday April 19, between 13:00-15:00

Children are invited to decorate their own hula hoops and afterwards they can take it home. The Hula Hoop Queen Húlladúllan will show the kids some tricks with the hula ring.

Shields Workshop

WHERE? Líkn Education Centre at Árbær Open Air Museum

WHEN? Thursday April 19, between 13:00-15:00

Children are invited to decorate their own Viking shields as they please. Afterwards they will go out with the group and take a photo of the whole group with their new shields.

Costume Workshop in a museum house called Landakot. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Iceland’s sovereignty, kids look at how officials dressed 100 years ago and design costumes as they think they should look like today.

Pancake tasting, football, homemade cars and playground

Taste some delicious pancakes at the old farm Árbær (between 13:00-16:00. Check out the football field at the museum and compete with your friends. Race around in a homemade car and enjoy the outdoor playground.

Collaboration on history and vision

WHEN? Friday April 20 between 16:00-17:00

 58 students in the 4th grade at Fossvogsskóli have been researching and exploring their neighborhoods from 1918 to 2018 and wondering how the neighborhood Fossvogur looked before it was built and how developments evolved in their neighborhood and in Reykjavík. A specialist from the Reykjavík City Museum visited the school and participated in two field trips. The result of the study is this exhibition which describes their vision for the year 2118. Last exhibition day is April 30.

In Lækjargata rolls a fun video showing dance styles from the past 60 years. Come and learn some steps!

Check out the football field at the museum and compete with your friends. Race around in a homemade car and enjoy the outdoor playground.

Children are welcome to take part in fun outdoor games on the museum square on both Saturday and Sunday between 13:00-17:00.

A fun picture puzzle will be presented around the exhibition THIS ISLAND EARTH, which discusses Icelandic landscape. The photo library contains search engines to view old photos. In one of the machines, pictures can be found especially of children on various occasions playing and working. It’s great fun to zoom into the pictures and look at the details and wonder about the lives and circumstances of children in different times.

Archaeology for the Family!

Step into the shoes of an archaeologist at the exhibition VIKING ANIMALS – THE SECRET OF THE SETTLEMENT where you can dig for a variety of artefacts in four locations. Will you unearth a bone or two or something else commonly found during archaeological digs in Iceland? Free admission for children and adults in their company.

Viking Helmet Workshop

WHERE? The Settlement Exhibition

WHEN? Sunday April 22, between 13:00-15:00

Children will make their own Viking helmet allowing their own imagination to play a loose. How will your personal Viking helmet be? Can the Viking helmet show what you are made of and protect you at the same time? The artist Ingibjörg Huld Halldórsdóttir manages this wonderful workshop for the whole family.
