Local Attractions
“The Eastfjords tend to be forgotten as people rush through the Ring Road,” said Sigríður Ólafsdóttir, the daughter of the owners of Berunes Hostel. “They forget that there is so much here, from rock climbing during long summer days to where visitors can explore during misty days. What you experience in the east is unlike anything you see in the rest of Iceland.” Berunes Hostel occupies a slice of Iceland that boasts amazing views with Papey island to the left, the little village of Djúpivogur in the front and a towering mountain range behind the hostel.
Tourists tend to visit the Eastfjords to hike, climb mountains, and watch birds in a remote tip of Iceland. “This is a great place to observe birds nesting by the sea,” said Sigríður. “We are also close to Papey island which is a must-see for birdwatchers as there are hundreds of pairs of puffins.”

Berunes Hostel is located next to Djúpivogur, a charming little village centered on the harbour, which happens to be the southernmost harbour of the Eastfjords. Here, visitors can catch boat trips to Papey along with bird and seal watching trips. The original hostel was converted from a century old farmhouse and the family has expanded the property to include private cottages, and double and family rooms with shared facilities. The in-house restaurant serves up delicious
