A joyous atmosphere surrounds Daði Guðbjörnsson as he commemorates his 70th birthday this year. In honor of this milestone, an exhibit featuring 70 of his artworks will be presented on Saturday, May 25th, 2pm at Gallerí Fold.
With a prolific career spanning four decades, Daði’s collection will showcase a variety of oil and watercolor paintings created between 2000 and the present day, some of which have not been exhibited.
Emerging in the early 1980‘s, Daði was among a dynamic group of young artists who revolutionized the painting as a concept through the Icelandic art movement known as the ‘new painting.’ Embracing fresh perspectives, these artists broke away from conventional norms to carve out their own unique creative paths. By the early 21st century, Daði emerged as a pioneer in the resurgence of figurative painting, solidifying his legacy. Daði’s distinctive style, characterized by vibrant colors and captivating spiral motifs, captivates viewers and transports them to ethereal realms depicted in his iconic imagery. Infused with a sense of whimsy and serenity, his artistry exudes a dreamlike quality that beckons exploration.
In 2006, Daði embarked on a spiritual journey that transformed his approach to art in a subtle way. Delving into Sahaja Yoga, he tapped into the transformative power of kundalini energy, finding harmony between the physical and spiritual realms. This spiritual awakening, depicted in his evolving art, enriches his creativity while maintaining a delicate balance between material and spiritual elements. Daði’s oeuvre beautifully encapsulates a harmonious fusion of matter and spirit, radiating the essence of lightness and joy.
