Hvammstangi

Húnaþing vestra

Húnaþing vestra is a municipality located in northern Iceland. Its major settlement is Hvammstangi with a current population of about 580 people.  The village develloped around the trading post and the inhabitants relied on the fisheries (shrimps mainly) and fish processing until this operation was shut down.  Nowadays its livelyhood is based on services and tourism, which plays an increasing role.

Travellers spend a few nights there to enjoy and explore the splendid nature of the Vatnsnes peninsula and to watch seals and birds.  A visit to The Icelandic Seal Centre is also an important addition to the educational recreation in Hvammstangi.

On january 1st 2017 the population of the municipality was 1174 people.
