The Ocean Shades by Ásmund Sveinsson

The World of Ásmundur

International Museum Day is held every year on May 18 by the International Museum Council. Admission to many museums is free, such as the Reykjavík Art Museum, the National Museum of Iceland and the National Gallery of Iceland. 35,000 museums in one hundred countries participate in this day, established in 1977. One of the museums worth visiting is Ásmundarsafn in Laugardalur. A museum dedicated to the works of the sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893-1982). It opened in 1983 in a unique house, designed by the artist as a home and studio, and built in the years 1942-1959. The garden around the house is also unique, with many sculptures by this pioneer of sculpture in Iceland.

Ásmundarsafn Museum is in a house that the artist designed and built himself. Architect Manfreð Vilhjálmsson then designed an extension that fits the house very well.
