Direct Words and Spells

Direct Words and Spells is the name of an exhibition that the poets Anton Helgi Jónsson and Sigurlín Bjarney Gísladóttir will open in Litla Gallerýi at Strandgata 19 in Hafnarfjörður on Thursday, April 11 at 18.00.

The works in the exhibition teeter on the edge between images and text, where letters and words can be used in a variety of ways and read in different ways; backwards and forwards, up and down, between the lines and against all conventions. The letters that appear to visitors can either stand alone and be independent symbols or form words that trace the memories of individuals and groups. The poets have created the works separately, but together they have shaped the appearance of the works in the exhibition. Some of the works are old, some are new, some are about history, some about the future, but all of them are about tangled words and different ways of reading.

Sigurlín Bjarney Gísladóttir (1975) studied Icelandic and creative writing at the University of Iceland. She has published four books of poetry, one collection of short stories and one novel. Sigurlín Bjarney works as a teacher at a secondary school. Her last work was the novel Sólrún, which was published in 2022.

Anton Helgi Jónsson (1955) studied philosophy and literature in Stockholm. He published his first book of poetry in 1974 and has since published numerous works in books, magazines and on social media. His last work was the poetry book Þykjustuleikarn, which was published in 2022.
