Jóhanna Margrétardóttir – The flesh of here and then
November 16th-26th 2023

Jóhanna Margrétardóttir was born and raised in Hafnarfjörður. She lived here until 2012, She used to frequent this very building to smoke, play video games and scare passers by as a teenager.

With her first solo exhibition in her hometown, she diligently choreographs her -chosen this time- return. An eternal return* or a punk’s return or both.

Her site and city specific installation research locality, the sense and need of belonging and of not belonging with one’s lifespan and body as timeframes. Blood, glass, [im]prints, projection and light are the media that materialize this process.

She bravely and openly asks us to reflect on what we choose to do with the space, topos and time we are given. Abide by them, shape them, or challenge and overcome them.

Irrespective of what the answer is, that inquiry alone, earns her a place in that bright line of outspoken and dedicated female Icelandic artists that spans many decades.

What makes us, us?
How do we choose to become who we are*?

Jóhanna Margrétardóttir graduated from the Icelandic Academy of arts in 2020, and completed her Masters in Fine arts in 2023. She has exhibited and been collected in Iceland.
