Beautiful Burden by Unnur Ýrr Helgadóttir

You are invited to the private exhibition Beautiful Burden by Unnur Ýrr Helgadóttir on November 26th at 2pm.

Unnur Ýrr Helgadóttir graduated from the Icelandic Academy of Arts in 2005 and has extensive art education both from Iceland and abroad. She has worked as an Artist, Graphic Designer and Illustrator in both Iceland and Sweden. Unnur has held numerous exhibitions in Reykjavík and Stockholm.

When painting, Unnur works mainly with acrylic on canvas. Almost supernatural colour combinations, surreal twists and strong storytelling are what characterize her paintings. The different disciplines of painting and graphic design interim- and create a world where reality and fantasy blend.

Beautiful Burden is Unnur’s first exhibition after she took on a new role in life – motherhood. The works exhibited now, are a personal journey through a period of change. The role most mothers agree is the best, most grateful, and most beautiful, but in all honesty, it’s also scary, confusing, nerve-wracking, and not always a bed of roses. What does it mean for the ego to no longer be in the foreground, as little human beings have taken over the stage and demand complete attention – all the time. The emotions are strained. Bliss and despair, the conditions of unrequited love, the self-preservation and the exhaustion that so often follows. But still trying to keep pace with life, finding again and recreating the self. In a unique, humorous, loving, sometimes a little dark but very honest way, Unnur Ýrr portrays motherhood. In paintings that have little in common with the glossy images of social media, but tell the truth about motherhood in its purest form, all its ups and downs, its Beautiful Burdens.

This is Unnur´s third private exhibition in Art Gallery Fold and will be on display until December 10th.

Art Gallery Fold in Rauðarárstígur Reykjavík is open Mon-Fri 10 – 6pm and Saturdays 12-4pm.
