Fifty years ago the town of Neskaupstaður was accessible only by sea, with no road link to the outside world. Since then the region has made up for lost time with visitors flocking to its outstanding Nature Reserve and to nearby Norðfjörður – one of the finest eastern fjords. Gerpir, Iceland’s easternmost point, is close by, as are interesting museums at Reyðarfjörður and Eskifjörður.
