Byggðasafn Húnvetninga- og Strandamanna

The Folk Museum of Húnvetninga & Strandamanna was founded some fifty years ago and accommodates a collection of unique objects showcasing local culture & history.

Local authorities in the Húnaflói area owns and runs the museum. On display are a few famous old boats. One ship among them is the famous shark ship Ófeigur from Ófeigsfjörður. This ship refined oil from the sharks and sent it to Europe where it was used as streetlamp oil. Shark oil was used in streetlamps in Europe long before electricity.
