Gunnlaugur Scheving is one of the main artists of the Icelandic nation who paved the way for new attitudes towards art in the 1940s, but the National Gallery of Iceland preserves a large collection of his works, including the artist’s death gift.
Gunnlaugur Scheving (1904–1972) was born in Reykjavík but grew up in East Iceland. He moved to Reykjavík in 1920 and took private lessons with sculptor Einar Jónsson. and later we studied at Guðmundur Thorsteinsson Muggs’ drawing school. He went to Copenhagen in 1923 and attended Viggo Brandt’s drawing school at the National Gallery. He then spent five years at the Royal Academy of Arts with Professor Ejnar Nielsen and Aksel Jørgensen.
Gunnlaugur Scheving (8 June 1904 – 9 September 1972) was an Icelandic painter.
