DIRRINDÍ featuring works by Þorsteinn Helgason

Gallerí Fold invites you to the opening of the exhibition DIRRINDÍ featuring works by Þorsteinn Helgason.

Þorsteinn Helgason studied architecture in Copenhagen and art at the Art School in Reykjavík and at the Art and Handicraft School. He first exhibited at Galerí Fold in 2000 and has since exhibited regularly in Iceland, but his work has also been shown in Copenhagen, London, Stockholm and New York.

Þorsteinn has a long career as an architect, but has now turned his attention entirely to art. He is a great jazz enthusiast, he’s a composer and pianist and has long explored the connection between music and art.

He has made a name for himself within the Icelandic art scene for his expressionistic abstract works, which are characterized by joy of colour and rhythmic image structure. The DIRRINDÍ exhibition is an independent continuation of the “Dans litanna” exhibition that was held in Gallerí Fold in 2022, where a strong natural connection ruled and the works were inspired by water, vegetation, fire and ice. The exhibition DIRRINDÍ shows the development that has taken place in Þorsteinn’s image style, where nature is still somewhere hidden in his images, but the focus is on the inner laws of colours and shapes where he uses various methods to bring them to life. Everywhere in Þorsteinn’s works there is a strong rhythm of shapes and colours that dance on the canvas and the strokes are fast and flowing. In the works of DIRRINDÍ, Þorsteinn shows more dexterity, more depth and more music than before, but continues his jazzy dance on the canvas. The exhibition DIRRINDÍ calls for a sweet harbinger of spring, heralding brighter times with colorful surfaces and fluttering lines.

The exhibition opens on March 2 and runs until March 23, 2024.

Gallerí Fold is located at Rauðarárstígur 14 Reykjavík
